As the fall term progresses, we must be prepared to be flexible. Turpin added that the university is exploring ways to create opportunities for students to connect with one another and with university services, acknowledging the importance of both in the lives of students.
He also said there will be residences available for incoming students, subject to directives of the chief medical officer of health, adding that the U of A is preparing to ramp up research activities as early as this month. I have published on olfaction as a framework for re-thinking diasporic subjectivities in the article “Diffuse Connections: Smell and Diasporic Subjectivity in Larissa Lai’s Salt Fish Girl” Canadian Literature, Spring , and I am currently revising an article that explores the politics of “diasporic settlement” in Hiromi Goto’s work. I am also interested in how literary and cultural production focusing on the Alberta oil sands represents relationships between diaspora, indigeneity, and settler colonialism.
Focusing on writers and artists such as Kate Beaton, part of my research examines the social and political implications of invoking the affective conditions of diaspora to represent white migrant oil sands workers as a “labour diaspora” Cohen. My scholarship of teaching and learning research focuses on active and experiential learning, multi-sensory learning, and the classroom as an embodied, affective space. I welcome messages from anyone working on related projects, and am interested in opportunities for collaboration and connection.
